Vernon5 You seem to have attended a school similar to mine. Emphasis on obeying rules and suffering the consequences if you didn’t. Was any other form of corporal punishment used eg the slipper and was the head the only person to use the cane?

Any other relevant info: During the boredom of the summer holidays I had decided to try smoking. I carried on my habit when I returned to school in September to start my 3rd year. During my second week back a group of 6 of us got caught smoking  at lunchtime in the boys’ toilets by a prefect. He patted us down and confiscated any cigarettes and matches he found and marched us over to the deputy headmaster’s office. We all had to wait there until the end of lunch break. We were summoned into his office, warned of the dangers of smoking and told we would get 4. I was 2nd to last in line, so got to watch 2 4th years, 1 5th year and another 3rd year get their 4 before I got mine. It had been a couple of months since my last time, but the whole thing still excited me. Didn’t work as a punishment, because I continued to get the strap (always 4 or 6) for smoking every few weeks for the rest of my time at school!

Any other relevant info: The school had recruited a German teacher to offer the top stream a second language. Unfortunately for the school, she had previously taught in a girl’s grammar school, and was lacking the skills to control a lively mixed-sex class in a comprehensive school! I was identified as the ringleader in the disruption (which was of course true), and was instructed to leave the classroom and stand in the corridor outside. Unfortunately for me, the classroom was next to the staff room, and the deputy headmaster came out of the staff room soon after I had been sent out. He marched me across the playground to his office and gave me 6 of the best, which hurt, but also gave me a bit of a thrill.

I got caught and told to report to the deputy headmaster’s office. I waited outside his office and was joined by 7 other boys who had been told to report, mostly for smoking. At the end of lunch break the deputy headmaster returned to his office and invited us in. I was first in line this time, so got my 4 without witnessing anyone else getting theirs. Pity!

We knew that the PE teacher (who was my form teacher this year) occasionally slippered boys bottoms for misbehaviour during PE lessons, but it came as a bit of a surprise that he would also use it during registration. Me and a classmate were late for afternoon registration. He retrieved a size 12 plimsoll from one of the drawers in his desk and told my mate to bend over and touch his toes. He was a typical PE teacher in that he was strong and fit, and I got a ringside seat of my mate getting 3 hard strokes of the slipper. The noise was incredible, and despite some nerves, I was excited that I was next. I bent over, and he didn’t disappoint me, landing 3 real stingers on my bottom. It stung like crazy, but within about 10 minutes settled down into a pleasant warm sensation. I knew it wouldn’t be the last time I got the slipper from him!

Any other relevant info: We weren’t allowed off school premises at lunchtime, only prefects were. One of the prefects had a lucrative business going, fetching sweets and drinks from a local shop, adding a little fee for fetching and carrying. Me and a couple of mates decided he needed a little healthy competition. We offered to undercut him, and managed about a week of sneaking out and back in at lunchtime without getting caught. We did get caught by the very prefect whose business we were undercutting. We were taken to the deputy headmaster’s office and he was able to see us immediately. He confiscated everything we had bought from the shop and told us we were also going to get the strap. One of my mates was only in the second year so he got 3, my other mate got 4 and I was identified as ringleader (justified again!) and given 6. I was last, so got to witness the other 2 before getting 6 of the best. I then had to go and repay everyone whose sweets were now with the deputy headmaster, wiping out all my profits!

He was in a bad mood anyway, and I managed to piss him off further by muttering “F*ck off” under my breath when he told me to stop messing around in the dinner queue. He wasn’t meant to hear, but he did and lost it big time. He dragged me across the playground to his classroom and told me to bend over. He then laid into my bottom with 6 really hard cane strokes. This was only the second time I’d ever had the cane and it really hurt. Once again I was a bit of a celebrity, and enjoyed showing off my stripes.

Any other relevant info: Me and a mate decided to bunk off for an afternoon. We went to afternoon registration, but then sneaked out of school and went to hang around the town centre. One of the teachers that afternoon spotted that we weren’t there and enquiries were made as to our whereabouts. These included phoning my Dad at work. He was livid, and he gave me about 10 with a garden cane on my bare bottom. Dads aren’t subject to the same limits as teachers, and it really hurt my bottom and the tops of my legs. We were instructed to report to the deputy headmaster before registration the next morning. There was only really one outcome – 6 of the best.

Any other relevant info: Four of us were repeatedly messing around during a swimming lesson, but it was the 4 of us doing synchronised bombing that caused the PE teacher to send us into the changing room, where he retrieved his slipper and told us to bend over for 6. I was first, and it seemed strange and vulnerable to be bending over dressed only in my soaking wet swimming trunks. It hurt, like the slipper from him always did, but I did get to watch my 3 mates get their 6, and watched as the red marks appeared where the slipper hit bare skin. By the time he finished with the other three, my bottom was still stinging like crazy, but we enjoyed looking at the red marks on each other’s bottoms as we got dried and dressed

4th year to follow

Looking back, whilst the canings obviously hurt, you rarely thought about the consequences of any misbehaviour.I do not recall ever being caned unjustifiably but escaped the summons to the Headmaster’s study on several occasions. It was the culture of the school and the Headmaster, when I met him several years after I left school, said each yearly intake of new boys would include a handful of recidivists who would make many trips to his study during their time at school.
